Molto spesso il compito era assolto dagli uomini di chiesa, frati e suore nei
loro monasteri provvedevano alla cura dei malati non autosufficienti.
Per questo gli ospedali molte volte erano praticamente una sola cosa con conventi e monasteri,
ideali per la loro posizione isolata e lontana dai villaggi fungevano a volte anche da luoghi di quarantena.
